3Oe needed help taking a licensed technology, aqueous ozone generation, and turning it into a commercially viable hand sanitizing product. After receiving some previously collected user research from an earlier project iteration, we began with limited constraints to create a new device from the ground up.

Ideation

Early explorations led the team in a few different directions. We needed to be sure the ergonomics of the system were in-sync with the majority of users, while in tandem, mechanical design was in it's infancy, frequently changing the unit size and hand placement needs. Additionally, the technology requirements and output tests were changing how a user may behave with the device. With all of these variables in the mix, development was kept fluid and exploratory.

Blending Engineering

Once our Engineering team was able to identify plumbing component locations within the spray chamber, we were able to ideate more specific form factors for optimal usability, ease of maintenance, and high visibility during use. Bright neutrals and muted greens/blues were used to communicate "hygienic", "comfort", and "aqueous".

Prototyping

As engineering progressed, we had to make many concessions to the original design intent. The overall size grew in order to accommodate new components and requirements, with additional flow controls and access panels also being added.Despite the changes, constant incremental improvements were able to be made through multiple levels of prototyping and hundreds of hours of testing.

Production Design

Due to the nature of this complex medical device, items such as product labels, accessible power buttons, water gaskets, and additional hardware had to be added. It was up to Industrial Design to blend these elements in as best as possible while being cognizant of budget and timelines.

For the side access panels, we created a dot gradient pattern utilizing the small droplets in the "Iggy" branding mark. The intent of this pattern was to ease the transition of the white housing into the aqua acrylic side/front panels and add small detail texturing to the form. It also minimized a "top heavy" aesthetic to the device while blocking some translucent visibility into the cartridge compartment.

Maintenance + Expandability

The device was designed so the most frequently changed components were the easiest to access. It was also configured to be able to sit into a countertop surface, similarly to a sink insert, in the event that a future iteration was no longer wall-mounted. 

By isolating the ozone-generating hardware into independent cartridges, the technology could easily be transferred to other systems for future aqueous ozone applications.

Production

As the design phase moved into production, we assisted the factory team in early builds to help assure the quality of the initial production units, while also gaining visibility into ways future product generations could be optimized for smoother manufacturing, testing, or maintenance processes.

"Iggy" was highlighted on the TV show "America By Design" in and was voted the winner of the "People's Choice Award".
